Usually we pick up the divers from the hotels and 8:00AM leave from Nessebar. Arrive about 10:00AM.at the harbor (depends which wreck we plane to go) Prepared the equipment, briefing leave by boat. Follows two wreck dives. Usually when we are back in the harbor we go for a Beer and meal. And about 5:00PM arrive back to Nessebar.

CARGO SHIP - ON THE ROCKS
Although not the ship in the picture, the wreck appears to be an unidentified cargo vessel which ran onto the rocks offshore. It is very broken over the area of the rocks, at a depth of 16m although the rocks do rise to surface levels.
CORVETTE / TORPEDO BOAT
In addition to the 1st Torpedo Boat, we have found a second vessel which we are unsure of, but the following are other classes of Torpedo Boat which may be this wreck.
Leichtes Schnellboot LS2 in 1940
In difference to other German fast attack boats, the ships of the “Leichte Schnellboote” class were never planned to operate by their own. Instead, they should be based on auxiliary cruisers or other vessels operating in overseas areas to support the operations of the mother ship. To do so, small boats were able to be fitted with different kind of weapons, form stern launched torpedoes, to mines and light machine guns.
They should be able to attack other ships by their own, lay mines in areas where the auxiliary cruiser could not operate or to transport raiding crews to allied merchant ships. In addition they were also able to operate against submarines in a limited way.
Because of their small size, those boats could only operate in light sea. Of the 12 boats completed, only three were used on board of an auxiliary cruiser, most of the others were sent to the Aegean or Black sea where they were for escort duty or submarine hunters.
GERMAN / BULGARIAN U BOAT
In 2010, this wreck was discovered some kilometres from Varna Bay. It has been uncovered that this U boat was transferred from the Black Sea Fleet to the Bulgarian Navy. However, after only 1 week, the submarine was sunk.
The wreck lies in 36m of water and is upright. The periscope is in excellent condition and the superstructure is mainly intact. This is a fantastic find and an amazing dive.
The personal jet of the ex-communist leader has been waiting to be sunk in Varna Bay for almost 2 years. It is scheduled to be sunk 25/05/11. The intention is that it will create a natural reef and become a new dive attraction in the area.
It is intended to be a penetrable dive with the doors, seats and wings removed. We look forward to diving this.
KRANEVO CARGO WRECK
An Unknown cargo ship sunk just off shore from the Resort of Kranevo. It is settled upright at a depth of 18m, mostly broken, but with a lovely superstructure and penetrable.
An interesting fact is that thermoclines are quite normal here, going from 25 – 15 degrees in an instant!
LANDING CRAFT X 5
While searching the region we discovered 5 landing craft, 2 upright the others upside down. It is not 100% clear what class of craft we have found, but the following are likely classifications:
Marinefährprahm (MFP) Type D
The Naval Landing Crafts – called “Marinefährprahm” in German were the largest landing craft used by the Kriegsmarine. The development of this ship went through several Types (A-D), whose size and armament grew from class to class. They were mainly used for transport and supply duties and not for their initial invasion role and could transport 200 Soldiers or 140ts of equipment, including Tiger tanks. Marinefährprahme were used in almost all Kriegsmarine operational areas, the British Channel, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
Marine Artillerie Leichter
With a length of nearly 35 meters, the Marine Artillerie Leichter (MAL) were the smallest landing craft in Kriegsmarine services. Designed after the requirements of the German Army, those small vehicles should be used during Operation Barbarossa, the attack on the Soviet Union. With the progress of the war, it operated in other areas like the Black Sea.
Based on the Marinefährprahm Type D, those Artillery Ferries were used for several different kinds of operations. Although being first though as a provisional design, they took over the role of gunboats in various operational areas, including the British Channel, Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
Besides their use as escort vessels, they were also occasionally used for shore bombardments and mine laying, they proved to be very usable crafts.
An American cargo steamship of the type of so-called Liberty Ships.
Built by Submarine Boat /a New Jersey shipyard owned by Electric Boat Company /later General Dynamics/. The ship was made according to a special program of the US Shipping Board related to the order of 150 identical ships with a view to compensating for the losses from the war. Launched on 20.01.1920. Displacement 3545 GRT. 1500 horsepower engine. Single screw.
Lying in very good condition on its starboard at a depth of between 22 and 32 meters. Height from the bottom – 10 meters. The main damage from the explosion is to the bow section of the ship. Clearly discernible are the superstructures, parts of the funnel and deck. The holds and some of the cabins are freely accessible. Parts of the cargo – a heap of boots, wooden boxes with spare parts, etc. are visible in the holds. The screw with a diameter of around three meters and the stern hoist are in place. The anchor chain slides along the hull and sinks into the silt on the bottom. Probably the anchor chain came loose at the time of sinking and wound itself around the ship. Sunk by a mine.
Former German ship Adolf fon Bayern. Displacement 5708 GRT. Launched in 1923. Purchased from Romania in 1932.
On 14 August 1941 Peles was heading for the Bosphorus in convoy with “Superga” and “Secava” guarded by two Bulgarian mine carriers. At dusk it was attacked with two torpedoes by SHT-211. Shortly afterwards there was an explosion and the ship quickly sank to not too great a depth. The guarding ships rescued most of the crew. Later, a German hydroplane rescued another one of the crew members. One died.
Bulgarian ship, launched at sea in 1922. Displacement – 4159 GT.
On Sept 19, 1941 „Rodina” was sailing full of load from Istanbul to Varna. It was guarded by two Bulgarian mine-layers. In the region of Burgas, it came across two mines and sank very quickly. Three people died. The crews of the mine-layers saved 37 people. The depth is between 30 – 43 meters. The height which „Rodina” reaches from the bottom is 14.5 meters! There is free access to the superstructure and holds, which are empty. A Captain Botsanevski blew up the wreck in the 50’s for the purpose of recovering the cargo and pieces of the hull.
Settled at 18-20m depth the wreck is scattered in an area of around 100m and is about 30m from shore, stern to shore. Located 25 miles from Burgas.
SHABLA: SHT-210 SUBMARINE
The “SHT-210″ submarine sunk in front of Cape Shabla in March 1942. All 47 sailors on board were lost.
According to the preliminary conclusions the sub suffered heavy damage caused by the Romanian S-15 mine fence, installed by the vessel “Murgesku”, or by a Bulgarian mine fence made by German UMA anti-submarine mines.
Sunk probably around 1900, this steamship was a spectacular find for us. The wreck is unknown, but is clearly a steamship as there are 2 boilers which rise to the surface and you can look through its columns to the surface.
The deckhouse is still clearly visible and is penetrable. The overall wreck can be clearly identified as it lies horizontal to the shore at a depth of 3-12m across an area of at least 100m. It is a delight to see.
East of Varna is the SHT-211, and south of Varna is the SHT-204. The vessels near Shabla are respectively SHT-210 and Л-24, which is a mine-laying submarine. It is more interesting and there are only a few of its kind found here in the Black Sea. Actually, this submarine represents the Soviet Union’s biggest undersea battle loss. A crew of 57 perished on that boat.
The other submarine type “SHT” which stands for „Spike” are big submarine boats of universal purpose, very popular at the time, manned by smaller crews. I think the missing submarine is actually the biggest challenge of all. It is an F-34. We presume it is locates somewhere east or southeast of Cape Emine, but there is no data showing its location. Still we have information about this boat as it was at the time identified as a battle loss.
This is where it patrolled and we expect to find it there. All these boats got sunk in the period November 1941 – December 1942.
THE CAROL 1
On the 10th October, 1941 at 6 minutes before mid day the mine layer Carol 1 after having left Varna harbor with a new load of mines sunk in 13 minutes, 2 miles away of Galata Burnu lighthouse, one NCO and 20 seamen lost their lives, the rest of the crew being rescued by the torpedo boat Smeul, which was convoying Carol.
There are two versions of how the Carol 1 sank, the first is that it struck a mine layed down by the Soviet ( Lenin class) L 24 mine laying submarine, which lays at a depth of 60 m near Cape Kaliakra.
Another version of the sinking of the Carol 1 is a torpedo attack from the Soviet submarine of ” SHCH 211″ which lies a little further away from the Carol 1. The soviet submarine SHCH ( shtuka / pike ) 211 rests in 22 mts of water in two sections 150 mt from each other with the loss of life of 44 personnel.
In the Varna region we have discovered lovely wreck of a Torpedo Boat. At 18.5m, this wreck is upright, with the torpedoes visible in the sand. The shape is very clear and it is a great dive.
Below is an example of what we think it is, but we are still working to confirm its model.
UPSIDE-DOWN U BOAT?
Although not confirmed, the theory so far is that this is a submarine, possibly German, from WW1. The theory is that in 1937 there was an attempt to raise her, which failed. This is supported by the number of ropes around its hull.
The wreck is bottoms up and has evidence of damage along its length in places. The bottom is smooth with a lovely set of props and sits at under 20m depth. The wreck of a submarine.
The alternate view is that it is a cargo ship, but I feel that if it were, it may not sit so level on the bottom.
DRY RIVER BED
Generally very broken wreck, this wreck is considered to be some kind of unidentified cargo vessel. It sits just offshore but only accessible by boat. It is in shallow water 3-10m but is an interesting dive.
Located near Shabla, this wreck is inshore although only accessible safely by boat. The mirror reference relates to a distinctive rock marking the site, which at a distance looks like a huge mirror.
Another unidentified wreck, but a lovely dive of a very broken wreck with a beautiful anchor. This cargo vessel obviously run aground and broke up on the rocks. It is a dangerous coastline and storms are common.
